The Silver Jubilee Song Contest 1977

Vote for your favourite musical tribute to the Queen

In 1977, to mark the Queen's 25 years on the throne, the BBC's teatime current affairs programme Nationwide - think The One Show wearing flares - ran a Eurovision-style public competition to find the best song for the Silver Jubilee. 

Hundreds of entries from all over the UK were whittled down to these five finalists. Use the UP ARROW ^ to vote for your favourite, then scroll down to see if your choice matches the winner picked in 1977. Will the people of today vote the same way? 

Remember, you only get one vote so use it wisely. 

Each region allocated its votes in order of preference, from four points for the favourite song down to one point for the worst one. As in the Eurovision Song Contest, they weren't allowed to vote for themselves.

In the end, one song won by a landslide.

When it came to the voting, the result was never in doubt.The Singing Butcher and the Coventry Kids ran away with it, taking home the maximum four points from every other region.Ahead of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, BBC Midlands Today reunited members of the choir at the Horizon Recording Studio in Coventry, where they recorded their winning song 45 years earlier.
