Top Gun: Maverick earned more than $124 million in its first weekend. The film’s release, which was delayed for two years due to Covid-19, is Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing movie launch ever in his 40 years career.
According to the Hollywood reporter, Top Gun 2 opened to $124 million from 62 markets, grossing $248 million worldwide through Sunday, taking into consideration that it is not playing in either China or Russia.
Top Gun: Maverick which is directed by Joseph Kosinski, is the prequel of the movie Top Gun that was released in 1968, which grossed $357.3 million at the box office.
Tom Cruise is reprising his role in the action-adventure original film as US nay pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The story follows Maverick’s return to the US Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, where he must confront his past while training a group of younger fighter pilots, including the son of Maverick’s late best friend Goose.
As reported by Fortune that the Film industry analysts weren’t expecting this huge success but also anticipated that Top Gun 2 might hit $1 billion gross at the box office.
