Toyota develops old cars to be environmentally friendly and reduce emissions
Japan's Toyota seeks to show that cars can run on clean energy, to attract fans of traditional gasoline.
At an industry event for custom cars in Chiba, east of Tokyo, the Japanese automaker unveiled two AE86-generation cars, one modified as a battery-powered vehicle and the other as a hydrogen engine model.
In a related context, Toyota President Akio Toyoda said that redesigning existing cars should be explored and taken care of as an option to achieve the goal of eliminating carbon emissions in the air by 2050.
In Japan, only about 1 in about 20 cars on the road is new, and older cars run primarily on petrol, at least in part.
As a relative newcomer to the overall electric vehicle market, Toyota plans to invest $70 billion to electrify its cars and produce more batteries.
It aims to sell at least 3.5 million battery electric models in 2030.
