Writing & Translation

Translator, Editor, Proofreader

$30/hr Starting at $25

I can provide writing, editing and proofreading services in either English and Spanish. I'm currently in my mid-30s and have lived half my life in various Latin American countries (Puerto Rico, Peru, Argentina) and the other in the United States. I have excellent mastery of both English and Spanish, allowing me to seamlessly do translate to and from either language. My skills have been vastly developed due to my fascination with others languages. I have taken university courses and lessons in French, Portuguese, Italian, Haitian Kreyol and Gurani. As I learned about similarities and differences in grammar between each new language studied and those that I learned before, new insights improved my understanding of all of them. I can provide translations that match regional Spanish aimed at Mexico/Central America, Caribbean or South America or provide a neutral Spanish to encompass all these audiences. I have done translation work for more than 15 years, on varied subjects, for several U.S. government agencies, including Voice of America and the Inter-American Foundation. Some of the materials include web page content, grant documents, info sheets, brochures, full-length articles and books. For several years at the office of publications of the Inter-American Foundation, I personally translated content but was also charged with proofreading the work of some 15 freelancers. I am deeply attuned to mistakes that freelancers can make when they are rushing to complete many jobs, in little time, to maximize their billing or, when they use software for a first draft, which they later edit, and leave careless mistakes behind. I actively try to avoid these pitfalls. Professionally, I can be speedy while also being a perfectionist. As someone who has provided both consecutive and simultaneous interpretation for guests at international conferences in venues such as the World Bank, the United Nations, State Department and the Inter-American Development Bank, I have the instinct to provide a quick, correct and understandable translation. But written materials allow us the possibility of taking extra time to find the perfect word and end up with a product that can be elegant or colloquial. When I encounter translations in cinema, signs or public announcements, I cringe when I notice poor choices that could be avoided by taking a few moments to carefully consider the context of the material and the ways in which native speakers would actually express the ideas in question. You can expect a quality level of work from me that conforms to this sense of perfectionism.
