British police said on Tuesday they had opened an investigation after a package containing uranium was seized atHeathrow Airport in London. The discovery occurred Dec. 29 during a routine check by border services officers, police said. According to the British tabloid The Sun, which was first to report on the seizure, the package came from Pakistan and arrived in England on a plane that had taken off from Oman. No danger to the population The uranium was found in a shipment of scrap metal and investigators are investigating whether the discovery was the result of "mishandling" in Pakistan, the BBC reported. "I want to reassure the population: the quantity of contaminated material was extremely low and its expertise concluded that it presented no danger to the population," police commander Richard Smith told the British press. "Although our investigation is continuing, this package does not appear to be linked to any direct threat based on our latest investigations," he added.
