Temperatures in the region may rise to 39 degrees by the middle of next week. The Minister of Health of the state of Brandenburg warns of dire consequences.

A heat wave is imminent in Berlin and Brandenburg in the coming days. The week begins on Monday with a mix of sun and clouds, but temperatures should already rise to between 26 and 30 degrees, the German Weather Service (DWD) announced Monday morning. According to forecasts, it will cool again at night with lows between 17 and 10 degrees.

According to DWD, it will be much hotter on Tuesday. With maximum values between 32 and 37 degrees and plenty of sunshine, a dip in the cool water in the outdoor pool or bathing lagoon is tempting. So it can stay locally warm at night, with

According to the forecast, the initial peak of the heat wave will be reached in the middle of the week. With values between 34 and 39 degrees and plenty of sunshine, bathing water should once again be a popular destination in Berlin and Brandenburg.

In light of the expected temperatures, Brandenburg's Health Minister Ursula Neumacher (the Greens) called for the protection of particularly vulnerable people. On Sunday, the minister warned that "the elderly, the chronically ill or in need of care, young children and pregnant women are at risk of heat stress." "I ask all the people of Brandenburg: Take care of yourself and your fellow human beings."

The ministry warned that long periods of heat caused by climate change have also had severe consequences in Brandenburg in recent years. The National Bureau of Statistics recorded 111 heat deaths last year, more than double the average number since 1985 (54). In 2020, there were 145 heat deaths and in 2019 there were 126. A sad record was reported in 2018 with 362 heat deaths.

The minister said that drinking at least three liters of non-alcoholic fluids in sufficient quantities per day is the most important method of self-help. "If you are experiencing symptoms such as nausea, dizziness or even vomiting and impaired consciousness, you should take action as these are the first signs of impending heatstroke."

The department said the Brandenburg state government is currently developing a heat action plan, which should be ready in September. In collaboration with all stakeholders, including those from the healthcare sector, the goal is to initiate concrete measures such as the installation of thermal glazing, drinking fountains or ventilation systems in hospitals and care facilities.
