Effective User's Guides are developed from a task orientation. The guide identifies the tasks required and the correct sequence for completion. Then one correct method is provided in complete detail using a combination of illustrations or screen shots and the related procedural steps. The writer must keep a tight relationship between all illustrations and the procedure. Each guide contains one chapter that identifies the functional components of the system for a quick reference. An additional Reference Guide may be required for more complex systems. This approach is the same for hardware and software manuals. My writing experience includes: • Developed documentation set for a start-up manufacturer of Field Programmable Object Arrays (FPOA). The document set provides the necessary information for engineers to devse the SDK to develop applications using MathStar’s chips. • End-user, service and engineering document set for Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) software. • Hardware Reference Guide, Programmers Reference Guide, and Applications Program Development Guide for a manufacturer of Vision systems. • Hardware and software technical manuals for a manufacturer of programmable integrated circuits.
