Analogue recording methods predate the invention of video editing. The tasks of editing, such as cutting the film and pasting it back together to add or remove frames, had to be carried out manually when using film reels. Later hardware equipment allowed for the automation of such tasks, but any changes to the footage had to be manually made to the film itself. The majority of modern video is recorded digitally, allowing for easy editing with video editing software. Digital video editing is seen as nonlinear, whereas analogue video editing is regarded as linear.
