Nearly 7,000 civilian deaths since the start of the conflict. According to anew report from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the number of civilians killed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine stands at 6,884, including 429 children. The UN report states that 10,947 civilians were injuredin the context of the conflict, i.e. a total of 17,831 civilian casualties. More than half of those casualties (9,695) were injured or killed in the separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, where fighting has raged for months. Most of the injuries, whether fatal or not, were caused by "explosive weapons with a wide area of effect, which includes bombardments with heavy artillery, rocket launchers, missiles and airstrikes", underlines the United Nations press release. Figure likely to be 'significantly higher' However, the UN agency says the actual figure is likely to be 'considerably higher, as the receipt of reports from some locations where intense fighting is took place has been delayed and many reports are still awaiting confirmation”. This is particularly the case for the victims in the cities of Mariupol, Izium,Lysychansk , Popasna, and Sieverodonetsk, where the number of civilian victims could still be underestimated.
