Dr. Lupton specializes in the application of bioprocessing to chemical and materials applications. Most recently, he has brought his expertise to the design and evaluation of technologies for biomass treatment and utilization, in support of the UOP Renewables Research group, focusing on the conversion of algal biomass to fuels using catalytic liquefaction.  Dr. Lupton has been responsible for the development of the XCeed™ system, an advanced fixed film based bioreactor system for environmental and fermentation processes.  Dr. Lupton led a multidisciplinary team focusing on the development of bioprocess strategies for industrial and environmental applications. Particular emphasis was on the development of high activity biological reactors with enhanced stability.  This technology has been a commercial product by Honeywell for >20 years and has recently been retained by UOP LLC, a Honeywell company for domestic & international markets. Dr. Lupton was also played a key role in the development of the Biological Air Treatment (BAT) System, a biological process for the removal of volatile organic and sulfur species from vent gas and other contaminated air streams.  This technology has been licensed to Purafil, Inc., for both North American and International markets. Dr. Lupton is currently working on biological processes to produce biodegradable bioplastics from low cost substrates and electrochemical processes for electrochemical CO2 conversion to chemicals.
