Custom post types are where you can add attributes/properties to a special kind of Wordpress post. For instance, we can make a special kind of post alled "Movies" and we setup movie attributes such as title, release date, actors, genre, director, production company etc... and they can be displayed any way we like on the page. These become searchable across the site which then turns a standard content management system into a very powerful data management system as well.
