A Forgotten Story

In a quiet town nestled among the lush green hills lived a man named Rajan. He was a farmer, humble and kind, who toiled from dawn to dusk. With hard hands and a heart full of love, he devoted his life to his family – his wife Meena and their three children: Arun, Nisha and Ravi.

Rajan’s life was a constant pattern of work. During summers, he lay in the hot sun and in storms, he braved the rain to work the soil. His children were his reality, and he wanted to give them a better life than he had. “Education is a better ladder to what is to come,” he would often say, even skipping dinner to pay the children’s school fees.Years passed, and Rajan's austerity proved successful. Arun became a designer, Nisha a trainer, and Ravi a successful finance manager. Every child set out to the noisy urban areas to fulfill their dreams. Rajan and Meena, though sad, were happy. Letters and calls from their children used to bring smiles to their faces, but with time, they too became rare.

One difficult winter, Meena fell ill. Rajan spent every penny on her treatment, but the cruel hand of destiny ended her. Alone and sad, Rajan sustained himself in the hope that his children would come back and pay attention to him.

But, the reality was unforgiving. When Rajan's health began to fail, Arun, Nisha, and Ravi quarreled over who would treat him. "My work is too burdensome," Arun said. "I have a family to support," Nisha said. "Father would be ideally placed in a care home," Ravi said.Rajan smiled. “A memory,” he said, handing her the toy. The spontaneity of her response moved Anya and she hugged him tightly. The moment lit a spark of merriment in Rajan’s weary heart.

Rajan’s expression of insight and generosity spread and soon people from the neighbourhood started visiting him regularly. They would seek his advice, celebrate with him and make him feel appreciated once again. Rajan, when forgotten by people of his own blood, became a beloved figure in the lives of outsiders.

Years later, on a quiet spring morning, Rajan died under the same tree where he used to cherish his memories. He had a photograph of his family in his hand and there was a peaceful smile all around.

At his funeral, the residents mourned deeply while his children, who were informed beyond the point of no return, came only to find a father who had left the world without a second thought. They stood before his original grave, on which were inscribed the words:

"A life of worship, generously given. Forgotten by some, remembered by many."

And yet, in their souls, the pain of responsibility reverberated forever.
