Hi! My name is Puritie jepkoech . I am a Nurse by profession working with a NGO in the slum areas of Nairobi city I am privileged to be working with people from different parts of the world. Therefore, this means that each one of them speak a different language and hence it becomes very difficult for them to understand one another. In my line of duty i encounter so many people who are not able to speak English. On the other hand, quite a good number of people living in this slum areas cannot speak other languages apart from the common language which is Swahili for this case. This is because most people in these regions are not education due to poverty, and ignorance. Apart from doing my job which is nursing, i also go an extra mile to be a mediator between the sick and the doctors so that they can receive our services conveniently . During my line of duty, i interact with different people speaking different local dialect. Myself being very keen i have been able to learn two local languages within a period of three years whereby i can proudly speak fluently. I still have hopes that i will be able to master more languages to make my Translation Skills much better. Apart from my Translation skills, i have taken the initiative to education the slum people about the Health lifestyle. Research shows that most of these people living in this kind of settlements have a very poor knowledge about living a health life. There is no proper hygiene in these areas due to lack of water and sanitation whereby most people fall ill from diseases which can be prevented by observing simple hygienic practices like washing hands after visiting the toilet. On this issue it has not been so easy because water is not available for them . Concerning the Drug abuse, most of them especially the youth are prone to hard drugs and its is not very easy to convince them that it is not good for their health. This is due to peer pressure from their friends, background and poor parenting. Most of them will end up in depression or committing suicide and other crimes like robbery with violence. The young girls will end up with early pregnancies and even being sexual workers. Due to my medical background i noticed there is another group of people using drugs on daily basis. They include people living with HIV, diabetics people with hypertension etc. More than fifty percent of this people lack proper knowledge on the proper compliance of these drugs. Therefore i have taken it upon myself to be my responsibility to provide them with education on the proper use of these drugs. I teach them importance of compliance and the need to engage i physical activities and practice a balanced diet. As much as i cannot reach to all of them , i believe i have made a positive impact to their lives
