A system of physically inscribed, mechanically transferred, or digitally recorded symbols is used to represent a language in writing, a form of human communication.
With the disputed exception of computer languages, writing systems are not in and of themselves human languages; rather, they are ways of putting a language into a form that can be decoded by other people separated by time and/or space.
