The Ukrainian president could be set to make only his second trip abroad since the war began, appearing at an EU summit in Brussels. 

Volodymyr Zelenskyy could address a special session of the European Parliament in person this week as well as attending the summit, according to the Financial Times. 

People briefed on the plans told the paper there were fears the plans could be derailed by security concerns. 

Asked about the prospect of a visit to Brussels last week, Mr Zelenskyy had said: "Frankly speaking, there are big risks if I go somewhere. This is true."

Ukraine has been pushing for accelerated entry into the European Union, and EU countries have been among the war-torn nation's biggest supporters. 

Last week, Mr Zelenskyy hosted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel in Kyiv, where the EU officials pledged more military aid and Russia sanctions.
