Zendesk has two distinct ways of importing data into the system. First being a straight CSV import, and second going through the API. The former (csv import) is very quick, and you can probably do it yourself. However, there is not a lot of flexibility and you will only get high level data into the Zendesk, so if there is truly value in having all of your tickets from the old helpdesk, you will definitely want to have a professional run an API based data import. We start off by first discovering what value your old tickets have and making sure that there is a significant ROI on this investment. Once we determine that we are truly providing value by running a migration, we build the necessary software to run the migration. Some of the logic has been built already, and it just needs to be customized to your old helpdesk and any business logic you may have. We then run a test migration of increasing quantities, and once we get to a level that we both feel comfortable with, we will run the full migration.
