I first discovered ‘copywriting’ 23 years ago. Yes, it was pre-internet days!
I was already working in marketing, but I wanted to add to my skills.
Someone told me I should try ‘copywriting.’
I found a position working for a company called Symphony Press. They sold info products on self-improvement.
They were a ‘direct marketing’ operation (think mail order). That means they made their money sending out thousands of ‘mailers’ every month to people who wanted to ‘know more’. Mailer packs were and still are, expensive to produce. To be profitable the 'sales copy' inside them HAD to be exceptional.
If it wasn't, nobody responded and the company LOST A LOT of money. On the other hand, if the copy was ‘hot’, hordes of people ordered and they MADE A LOT of money.
And that’s where I trained as a rookie copywriter and earned my ‘copywriting chops.’ Ultimately I became an expert 'direct response' copywriter and their 'copy chief.'
99% of ‘copywriters’ are NOT trained in this way. Consequently, they don’t understand sales copywriting on the same level as someone who is. And that’s why ‘direct response’ copywriters are the most sought after in the world. They are the super-ninjas of sales copywriting.
Over the last 23 years, I’ve used my ‘ninja’ copywriting skills to launch and grow multiple companies selling things as diverse as dating, self-improvement and Health Supplements. The supplement company has grown into a multi-million dollar organisation. All because of their sales copy.
