Designing with purpose, designing for change.
Alan is an engineer, entrepreneur, and startup advisor, mentoring multiple startups, a Starting Bloc Fellow, ThinkImpact Fellow, and a World Economic Forum Global Shaper. Alan was honored to participate in The Impact Engine and Acumen + Chicago Accelerator. Alan was also named Engineers Without Borders emerging leader of the year and was voted people’s choice winner for energy by the Dell Social Innovation Challenge.
As an engineering alum specializing in designing appropriate technologies for the developing world and current Stanford University Innovation and Entrepreneurship student, Alan’s prior experiences have taken him into conflict zones in Africa. At Northern Illinois University, he served as president of Engineers without Borders for two years and oversaw two projects on two different continents. He was named an Outstanding Student Leader of the Year by the University and won a $10,000 business plan competition.
Having lived in Africa and traveled to more than 26 countries around the world, Alan is fascinated with emerging economies. Now living between Chicago and Nairobi he loves the fast paced lifestyle of the third largest city in America, but prefers the beauty and culture of East Africa. A jumper into wonders of the world (bungee jumped into Victoria Falls) and climber of mountains (summited Mt. Kilimanjaro), he enjoys the unknown and backpacking the world. Alan also enjoys flying and volunteering.
