I am a USA qualified Architect with Masters degree from Pratt and registered architect in Castries, Saint Lucia, Caribbean
My home-and-workplace is located in tropical Caribbean, Saint Lucia where I obtained primary and secondry education prior to tertiary education in US Virgin Islands and USA mainland. I developed a love for architecture while in USVI and applied to a few universities about 1967 after which I selected Hampton Institute (which became Hampton University in 1984.) I remained in USA some 17 years during which time I attended other universities such as Morgan State College, took a few Urban Planning courses, and later attended Pratt Institute where I obtained a Masters in Architecture in 1977, focusing on Cultural and Hotel Design /Urban Design.
After this I was recommended for a job by a Pratt professor Ed Cohen at City of New York Transportation Design Section as a Project Manager/Urban Designer in the area of Modernization of subway stations in NYC . I had some Architectural/Planning experience in Baltimore as well prior to attending Pratt.
In 1982, being the first Saint Lucian architect to be qualified , I was offered a UNDP post to head the Architectural Section at the Ministry of Planning in Saint Lucia under a 2-year contract. I designed schools, health facilites, offices, masterplan for portion of downtown redevelopment. and notably the Cultural Center at Barnard Hill. etc. At the end of my contract I opened my own practice.
In this age of austerity we are all concerned about the sustainability of our real estate investments. Hence when the time comes for engaging an architect you must be selective. In today’s environment the bottom line is profit and sustainability. AFA Inc. (Alexis Felix) places sustainable “green” designs at the vanguard of architectural design without sacrificing function and aesthetics. While installing ”green“ equipment is a good thing, the building form should be energy-efficient, smart, eco-friendly, sustainable, as well as functional and aesthetic.
Work Terms
I operate from 9 am to 5pm Atlantic Standard time , mostly weekdays, but in some situations can work on weekends as well. I estimate 20-30 hours per week, fees can be hourly $50-$75 per hour or fixed fees in accordance with the scope and timeframe. I believe in feedback from my clients.
