Words that Break Barriers: Empowering Equity through Freelance Collaboration

Before becoming a certified Texas teacher in 2019, I graduated from Iowa State University in 2017 with a BA in English. I explored various educational settings through student teaching and practicum work, ranging in socioeconomic status, diversity, and population size, opening my eyes to the world around me. Upon my certification in Iowa, I dreamed of making an impacting a diverse population beyond the Midwest. I relocated to Long Beach, California, and pursued additional certification. In the interim, I served as a private tutor and caretaker for a middle school student. I subsequently worked in retail to challenge myself further (I am not sedentary and prefer to stay productive). Life has a unique way of drawing you to where you're needed most, so by the time I was a certified teacher in California I was presented with two separate teaching opportunities in Houston, and this Midwesterner quickly acclimated to Houston's fast-paced urban lifestyle.

My ability to conquer ambiguity, prioritize tasks, and perform in a compromised environment capture just a glimpse of my capability to thrive at work. Unlike those without experience with adolescents, I can assess situations "in the thick of it" and quickly prevent escalation or harm from impacting productivity or relationships. Navigating remote learning during a pandemic and corresponding with students, parents, and colleagues with differing perspectives only further solidifies my propensity to work under pressure and easily conquer a wide variety of obstacles.

I am currently in my sixth year teaching 10th-grade English at Northbrook High School and have reached this pivotal moment where I am searching for opportunities outside of the classroom to spread my wings professionally and increase my impact. As teachers, we possess a rare temperament that influences future generations beyond the walls of the institution. This trait challenges me personally to self-regulate and work under pressure to achieve a desired outcome. I am incredibly humbled to have had an accomplished teaching career, and my resume reflects a wide variety of experiences and competencies that can meet the needs of countless employers.

Enhancing experience through positive impact is one of my "Career Love Languages", whether through skill development, collaboration, customer care, or establishing camaraderie with a diverse group of colleagues. I feel a strong sense of belonging when collaborating with other open-minded professionals; The beauty of the freelance world is the expansive impact and meaningful engagement partnered with fulfilling rewards and transformative results.

When I'm not in the classroom "fighting the good fight" or doing freelance work, you can find me unwinding on my yoga mat, walking my dogs, Remi and Roscoe, or on my couch eating chips and enjoying a book or movie.
