I distinguish people in crowded job markets.
Many people now hire resume writers, so even a professionally written resume often looks average. I'm uniquely qualified to solve this problem:
1. I have worked on resumes in many disciplines and helped people from C-level executives to new grads. As an experienced resume writer and a member of the National Resume Writers' Association, I'm both seasoned and up to date in this field's current practices.
2. I have also been a recruiter, so I know how hiring managers select a resume from hundreds of others.
3. I'm up to date with applicant-tracking software (ATS) systems. More than 70% of the resumes sent for a typical opening won't be seen by human eyes because ATS systems screen them. They require effective use of keywords and certain types of formatting. There are over 140 ATS systems, and they have different requirements.
4. I've been voracious reader for 30 years (with an 8,000-volume home library). Living with texts on a daily basis has made me an exacting critic when I examine a document. My ability to see how a resume can be improved over its competition is unmatched.
5. I'm a versatile and creative writer. In addition to resumes and cover letters, I've written articles about creativity, art, travel, business, history and religious studies. I've also written a book about creativity, which will be published in January. I have traveled in 34 countries and I visited several many times. My broad background enables me to see all of your strengths in more ways. My diverse writing experience allows me to give them extra impact. The ability to see beyond what others do often makes the difference in the hiring process today because people constantly upgrade their resumes to compete with each other.
I'll be happy to give you a free resume critique and show you what I can do to help you take the next step in your career.
Work Terms
I'm new to Guru.com, but I've had many happy clients over the years (please see my testimonials).
I will begin when you email me your resume and any information you have about the job you're seeking, and I'll give you a free critique. We will then formulate the best strategy for your resume. I'll send you a rough draft within 24 hours.
Then we'll go deeper. There's an Irish saying: When you confirm directions, ask two people. In both resume writing and international travel, I've learned to take nothing for granted. Even if something on a resume already looks good, I'll ask how it can be great. I will pick your resume up many times and look at it in novel ways.
I'll also optimize your resume for ATS systems. Writing resumes for both machines and people is a delicate balancing act--both read in different ways.
English matters. Is your resume for a Silicon Valley start-up that's run by people in their twenties who wear T-shirts to executive meetings? Do you want to be a VP at Goldman Sachs instead? My versatility as a writer will allow me to use English to best highlight your strengths in any context. It will also enable me to go beyond the typical verbiage on resumes and showcase you with more energy.
Music matters too. There are ways to compose a resume's sections so that they'll make a stronger impression on the hiring manager (as a former recruiter, I know how hiring managers think when they skim and read resumes).
I can also provide interview coaching if you need it.
Finally, I hope we'll both enjoy the process. As a resume writer and explorer of world cultures, I focus on discovering the richness in people, and I've learned that each person is unique. I love to find people's strengths and write about them. I hope you'll walk away, not only with a great new resume, but also feeling invigorated, with lots of new ideas about the next step in your career.
