Work Terms
In my experience I find it is often more agreeable to offer the client a flat fee for a project rather than to bill by the hour. This puts the client at ease as we can settle on a fair price and there is no danger I bill beyond their expectations. Trust is important and this helps avoid any surprises or disputes which could arise from billing by the hour.
Clear communication and trust is key to a successful working relationship with a remote client. Conference calls and Skype are useful for introductions and speaking face to face can help solve issues in real time. The sharing of documents such as google docs and storyboards are also necessary to ensure both parties are on the same page. I always confirm that the steps and deliverables are agreed upon before entering into a contract. This includes pricing, schedule, client expectation and deadlines. Maintaining a good reputation and exceeding client expectations is always my goal.
My strategy is to always keep a cool head, remain diplomatic and to problem solve when the ball is in my court. If I require additional help I will take the initiative and do what is necessary to honour any agreement I have made with a client.
