Experienced editor and proofreader - no job too odd!
I completed my copyediting and proofreading training in 2015 with the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). Since then I've worked on over 200 book-length projects, almost evenly split between fiction and non-fiction. I've undertaken further training and CPD and expanded my services to include developmental editing and manuscript assessments. I'm now an Advanced Professional Member of the CIEP. I'm based in the UK, but about half my work is in US English and I'm comfortable with both.
My specialist genres are fantasy, sci fi, horror, crime/thrillers, YA, and literary fiction. I particularly enjoy things that are surreal or weird! I also have a very strong stomach for material that other editors find triggering or unsavoury.
In non-fiction my specialisms are the arts, the humanities, memoir, self-help, and lifestyle. I have a bachelor's degree in Fine Art (Painting).
I really enjoy working with self-publishing authors, especially helping those who are new to the process. My aim is to build up your book and make it the best it can be, not tear it apart! I take a polite and constructive approach. If you want an editor who will be rigorously thorough but not too uptight to crack a joke, I could be the one for you!
Work Terms
I work across 7 days a week, and my hours can vary from 'standard office hours' to late at night. This enables me to communicate effectively with clients in different time zones. I aim to respond to emails and messages within 24 hours.
Most of my communication is in writing, but I'm happy to have phone and video calls with clients if it works better for them. I appreciate some people prefer to put a face to the name and check I am who I say I am - or just find it easier!
I usually calculate my project price based on a per-word rate, confirming the total cost on sight of the manuscript.
