Experienced Freelance Print Journalist
I wrote mostly for small local newspapers for 22 years. My articles were frequently about conflicts between community activists and government officials concerning land use and infra structure issues. Legal questions were sometimes involved. A few of my reporter colleagues said what I wrote about made them sick to their stomach, but I enjoyed the controversy. As chairman of the Baltimore County Ethics Commission for four years and writer of ethics opinions, I gained insights into ethical issues involving government.
Other subjects I wrote about were environmental cleanup, education, promotion of businesses, personal profiles, medical issues, historic preservation, and the occasional original short story. A book I wrote as recipient of a grant from the Baltimore County Historical Trust, Beautiful Long Green Valley, describes farming practices, historic buildings, and notable local people.
Articles that were especially entertaining to write include a description of an astronaut enjoying her job, naughty behavior at a nightclub called the Black Hole, the vanity of a body builder who kept looking at himself in the mirror, and the donation of Herstmonceux, a castle in England, to a college in Canada.
Hobbies include classical piano music. After receiving a Certificate of Piano from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, MD, I self-published an edition of some keyboard pieces called Sinfonias by J.S. Bach. The book sold in about 12 countries and was most popular at the undergraduate level. One of my work projects was an on-stage themed original piano program involving audiences. I performed it at elementary schools, senior centers, and assisted living and nursing facilities. I had to turn down one program in India because Middle C was missing from the piano. However, the food at that private boarding school was delicious.
My life included travel. While living in India for 11 months, the prime minister of the states of Jammu and Kashmir arranged a one-on-one interview for me in Dharamshala with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. It was published in a spiritual magazine. My writeup of my trip to the North Pole was published in the Baltimore Sun. I rented an apartment for a while in Athens, Greece and studied the language. Other travel included various Western European countries and more far-flung destinations such as China, Egypt, and Indonesia. I have stories to share.
Other hobbies include enjoying hiking in national and local parks, swimming, and reading. As my life has been full and with some satisfying adventures, my focus is now on you, my employer. Through my writing, I hope to help you achieve your heart's desire while enjoyiing the journey along the way.
