LET ME START WITH THE BIG PICTURE
In the past 2 decades I have lived and worked in various different European cities. During all this time I was always playing football and often it took me a while to find and claim my position on the pitch.
Actually, I realise now that over the years I have played in almost every part of a football team. During tournaments I was often playing in the goal, mainly because no one else would. This permitted me to direct my teammates during the game. I always loved to play in the offensive midfield or in the attack. However, claiming the attacker’s position wasn´t easy, especially not when I started playing in a new team. I learned that it is worth starting slow and taking a position in defence or as a defensive midfielder. It requires patience and persistence to be allowed to play in a more offensive position.
The same rules apply to working in different countries and in different jobs. You always need to find your place first and later – when you are more self-aware - you can try to convince your collaborators to find the position where you can best support the team with your expertise and skills.
My life experience is that in order to solve complex issues it is often required to be patient, communicate and – most importantly – to listen. Sometimes this is not enough, especially if you are faced with a serious problem that evolves during a project. Often, it has helped me to take a step back and develop a fresh perspective. This can result in finding more strategic, meta-solutions, which are often a result of thinking out of the box.
