I love languages and cultures. I most enjoy translating from Portuguese to English and can easily speed up for live interpretation. Multilingualism!
Having been born in Kenya, East Africa and then learning French at school in Scotland and graduating from The University of Birmingham in a multicultural city in central England, I have always been immersed in multilingual situations everywhere from birth onwards.
My formal French language education lead and bridged effectively for Portuguese, which I have been gradually perfecting for 19 years as I am married with two children and my wife whose hometown is São Carlos in São Paulo state here in Brazil. I have been teaching all ages since my post-graduation in 2000 but as my wife has taken on the baton in school teaching I stay home with our infant boys and am therefore adapting my skills to translation and interpretation.
Since living in Florianopolis, in southern Brazil I have made a lot of formal translations, mostly for employers or for associates and academics at local universities in various locations. I have translated anthropology, medical sciences, certificates and official documentations, agricultural sciences, ecological sciences, education and pedagogical science. My interpretation is commonplace informally in many situations for people here who don´t speak Portuguese, especially academics and tourists. Additionally, I have made formally paid interpretation from live internet broadcasts from English into Portuguese for audiences in Brazil.
I am best suited to translate from Portuguese to English as I am a native English user but I can also translate from English to Portuguese, it just takes longer! I am able to translate from Spanish to English but again it would be more laborious. I enjoy developing my vocabulary in any specialised area and therefore would accept all kinds of work despite my specialised history in translational work. I have also done a lot of correctional editing and proof reading to improve other translators work, adjusting the English directly towards the target audience and readerships.
Work Terms
I like to work without tight or impossible deadlines or times of completion. As I work from home I am capable to concentrate without many distractions, especially as my wife and her extended family share the childcare for our sons. So, I require plenty of forewarning for both translations and internet oriented interpretations.
Our internet and technologies are totally capable, so we are well equipped to complete work effectively, both written translations, and internet interpretations, etc
I have normally translated from Portuguese to English at R$0.25/word=£0.05/word, but am flexible depending on the size of projects, timescales and currencies. I would expect around R$100/hour=£20/hour with interpretations although from these base rates, everything is negotiable. We can receive payments in any currencies but would like estimated quantities in UK pounds or Brazilian reais.
If there are more aspects of how your system works, please let me know.
