The French Phillips partnership is a collaboration between two historians, Dr Craig French and Barry Phillips, who have extensive research and project management experience in academia, business, governmental and non-governmental organisations.

Based in Scotland, but operating through the power of technology across the world, it is our ongoing aim to contribute an independent, passionate, and highly professional approach to the historical/heritage consultancy sector.

You might be a person fascinated by your own or your family’s past; a house owner who is curious about the place you spend your days; a CEO looking to develop the corporate business brand through focusing on its history; an archaeological team in need of a historical interpretation on a site, or a multi-media producer looking for advice on authenticity and accuracy or scripts. If you want to sum us up in a few words – we are storytellers – but our stories are about you and those that came before you. We believe in making your past a present reality and we know just how to do that.

We create relationships, not transactions. Our aim is to listen to you, understand your needs, undertake research, identify key aspects, advise on what is relevant, and produce results you are happy with. We will be there, as questions or issues arise, every step of the way.

Work Terms

We are both historians who have run our own successful research and project management businesses and now choose to focus more specifically on historical consultancy due to a belief in the value of the subject and the sector. Quite simply we want to add quality work to that which we, and you, value.

I am a historian (and former archaeologist) and research (PhD) professional, project manager (PRINCE2), and published author/writer, with extensive management experience in both the public and private sectors.

Member of the Scottish Genealogy Society.


Barry Phillips

Former Civil Servant, speechwriter and policymaker. Former songwriter and performer. Historian by training and vocation.
