We had a loosely defined project (building an Access based database to track client billings and calculate employee commission compensation) with no functional spec and George was able to work with us to define the project, identify key requirements and features, and then build it. He is very good at working with end users to understand business processes and he makes good judgements regarding user requirements. After getting a handle on our needs, George was able to work independently to complete the project. George communicated effectively with the right parties throughout the project and I would say George's communication style and desire to understand business processes are two of his biggest strengths. He is also very competent technically, but we've worked with plenty of contractors who's communication challenges impeded their ability to apply their technical skills for maximum benefit to the client, so I would say this is where George has a big advantage.
