As a child, I found comfort in books that I could relate to. As an adult, stories are vehicles for escapism. I look to reproduce a combination of these feelings in my illustrations.
My name is Davi and I'm a Venezuelan illustrator and book designer currently based in Connecticut. As a young voracious reader, I would cut out the illustrations from my favorite books, fold them to the size of grains of sand, and swallow them whole.
I am passionate about storytelling through sequential art. In literature I am most influenced by magic realism novelists like Gabriel Garcia Marques and Hiroko Oyamada. Naturally I am also influenced by symbolist painters, especially Frida Kahlo. In my children’s books, it is important to me to show the ugly, awkward, sometimes sad side of life through magical perspectives.
