Creating Comprehensive Curriculum in Physics
After graduating from the Physics Department of Moscow University in 1988, I worked in Lebedev Physics Institute of Soviet Academy of Science. In 1991 I came to US to continue my education. While doing graduate studies in University of Missouri Saint Louis I taught Physics, as well as tutored and consulted Mathematics for undergraduate students. Since 1996 I taught in the inner-city schools, starting an AP Physics programme in several of them. I taught a wide range of science subjects including Physics, AP Physics, Physical Science, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Computer System Physics, Optical System Physics, and supported independent research. During the summers of 1998 and 1999 I attended Modeling workshops, which changed my approach to teaching Physics into a student centered enterprise. As I was teaching, I realized that a school setting is limited for learning Physics, so I developed projects for learning Physics through different venues: Physics in fiction, Physics of video games, etc. I presented these projects at many of the American Association of Physics Teachers Summer & Winter National Meetings. I also gave serious thought and effort into integrating instruction in Physics and Mathematics.
I believe that anyone is capable of mastering a certain level of Physics and Mathematics, even and especially if it happens outside school building and hours.
