He touched the birthmark gingerly, his eyes staring into the bleak wall of the small orphanage compound. No one had dared to write on that wall since Edgar tried it a year earlier and felt the hard hand of Sister Nancy on his head, and its clear unwritten status was a display of the orphanage staff’s intolerance to wayward youngsters. A wall, just like his birthmark, that spelled the unchanging status of his woes; a way of life he could not escape. Just as he could not get rid of the birthmark on his face that had been his curse all his life, that wall had proved impenetrable. There was no way through it and there was no way around it.
