Supercalifrag Eclectic
James began training and performing as a ventriloquist, magician, mime and public speaker with a travelling performance troop based in Chautauqua, N.Y. at the age of 13. He continued for 5 years, training, performing live throughout parts of the United States and also coaching others new to the troop. Ventriloquism developed the skills of fleshing out various voices for characters, being aware of breathing technique, switching abruptly between character voices, pacing and projection. Magic exercised the theatrical, over-the-top, and mystical elements that are inherent to the craft, and public speaking necessitated a more relaxed, relatable, authentic yet experience, confident and knowledgeable performance. He was also trained in writing the scripts for his acts.
Interlaced with this was James’ love for music. He had been taking piano and singing lessons from a very young age, and at the age of 17 began taking guitar lessons and taking singing more seriously. Both involved professional training. These experiences evolved into a desire to gain more experience which lead him to Recording Arts Canada where he graduated with a diploma in Audio Engineering and Music Production and later worked as a teacher’s assistant. RAC’s program included a course on voice over. James wrote commercial scripts, performed, recorded, edited and mastered them and also trained in dubbing and audio / video sync. James has worked with DAW’s Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Cubase, Nuendo, Reason, Tracktion, Reaper, but prefers Ardour for his home studio.
James’ home studio is also used for post production work providing field recording, sound effects, and foley.
