In nearly 15 years of living abroad in Sao Paulo, Brazil - during which time I became fluent in Portuguese - I immersed myself in the culture and traveled extensively throughout the country. As an ESL coach and freelance translator, I had the opportunity to work with individuals from all walks of life and levels of fluency. My goal was always to facilitate communication, foster cross-cultural understanding and create an environment where my clients were free to explore language and ideas, in a context that was relevant and personalized. By applying active listening techniques, I was able to not only point out obvious errors in usage and grammar, but also to explore the subtler nuances of meaning. I was able to help many clients overcome their fear of making mistakes and release their inhibitions of speaking in another language. The thousands of hours I spent in conversation with countless individuals afforded me a privileged opportunity to learn about the people and the culture of Brazil.
