I am not a professor of language: I am a practitioner, concerned with its technique.
But I do have an axe to grind: how well can one write with our hopelessly inadequate alphabet devised centuries before the English language existed to record another and very different language. It is reduced to absurdity by a foolish orthography based on the notion that the business of spelling is to represent the origin and history of a word instead of its sound and meaning. Thus, when I was, as a kid, bidden to spell ”debt” and I spelled it very properly, d-e-t, I was spanked for not spelling it with a b because Julius Ceasar spelled the Latin word for it with a b. useless grammar is a devastating plague. What is wrong with ”Sorry, no can”? Instead, you want, ”I regret that I shall be unable to comply with your request”.
