A highly experienced IT professional with 30+ years experience in space, financial and medical fields. Although I have a broad skill set, my primary focus is databases and warehousing.
Graduated with an honours degree in Engineering from Bristol University in England in 1986. Initially worked at GEC Avionics developing a real time tactical mission system for Westland Helicopters. Soon moved to Frankfurt, West Germany to work as a system programmer for the European Space Agency. After 3 years in Germany, I moved to Dallas, TX working for an RFID company developing automatic toll collection systems. Was the lead developer for the original Autotoll system on the tunnels in Hong Kong and spent another 2 years supporting the system while being based there. Moved back to London in the mid 90's and worked for a financial services company where I became database focused. Early in the 2000's I then moved to Eindhoven in the Netherlands and was employed as the database architect for a major medical business on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners. After 5 years in Holland, I moved to my wife's home country of South Africa and have since worked in various roles for one of the corporate companies specializing in insurance, based in the Western Cape. The majority of my time has been spent as the database manager and IT operations manager for the second largest medical insurance scheme in South Africa.
From a database perspective, I have experience in Physical and Logical Database Design, row-based and columnar internal storage structures, end to end performance optimisation, DSS and OLTP, issue diagnosis including locking contention, 3NF and star / Kimble designs using Sybase, SQL Server, MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL and to a lesser degree, Oracle and DB2.
I am a certified ITIL (v3) expert through Pink Elephant.
My spare time is usually spent either travelling or playing golf off a 6 handicap.
