A few years ago, I was trying to explain something to a client and the only thing that I could come up with was "we don't know what we don't know". She was beating herself up for some financial decision she had made the previous year. I kept saying, "but the professional you dealt with should have brought that to your attention... How can you expect to know something about something you know nothing about?"
I had, as Oprah coined, an "ah-ha moment". We cannot be expected to know something about something that is not our specialty. I would never try fix a dental filling, nor would I try to change the oil in my car. I wouldn't know where to start.
