Communication First, Art Second.
Hi I'm Katy. I'm a recent graduate of Southern New Hampshire University with a degree in graphic design. I've done several freelance projects in the past. I enjoy working in several art mediums and have been known to incorporate them into my design work. I have experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I have been using Photoshop since 2014, Illustrator since 2016, and InDesign since 2017. I love designing all kind of things, but I think my favorite is probably logo design. I’ve even done several logo designs for fun.
My past work includes:
*flyers
*posters
*signs
*thank you cards
*logos
*book covers
*magazine layouts
My design process begins with doing research about what I'm going to be designing. I write down notes as I come up with ideas while doing research. For example, when I created a sign for a greenhouse, I looked at different images of greenhouse signs. I wrote down different ideas that I came up with for the design, this includes things such as color palettes and typefaces that I believe would work best. Then I do some rough sketches to get an idea of how different things would look. After the rough sketches are finished, I have the client look at them to see which one they're leaning towards. I then create a bigger sketch of the one they want and make it digital.
I enjoy getting creative with my work and really enjoy using a hands-on technique with my work. I've taken many design classes that encourages using different mediums to incorporate into design pieces.
I would say that my design style is fairly simple. Like many people have said, less is more. I think that this is especially true with graphic design. The message of a design should be clear and memorable. The audience should know what they’re looking at. Graphic design is all about communication. I was once told that graphic design is communication first and art second. As I’ve gained experience in graphic design I have come to really live by that principle.
