Working to leverage my many skills into a freelance career.
After 15 years of government employment in GIS and IT, my experiences in the private sector have left me yearning to do something on my own. Given the business climate since the recession in 2007-2008 and the continuing trend of doing business more and more online, people have been moving away from "traditional" employment in favor of pursuing activities which leverage not only their own personal skills, but also take advantage of employers' growing needs for quality work without the overhead of office space for employees. (i.e telecommuting and the like). I've decided to "join the herd", so to speak, with respect to being part of a growing "global workforce" which lacks the need for the traditional office while maintaining a quality of work standard which meets the needs of employers.
Work Terms
I am currently working 32 hours a week at a traditional job, so I am only availble in the evening, and somewhat diring the days of Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. I have been told by my curent employer that the likelihood of being laid-off "soon" is high, so I am trying to use my time wisely to secure some other income stream ASAP so as to not burn through savings and the like while looking for another " traditional" job, which are low-paying and scarce where I am currently living.
