Living in New Mexico, I was inspired to invite local Native American environmental scientists and engineers to co-create a Bio-Remediation business where we would popularize the construction of man-made wetlands for cleaning wastewaters of cities, industry and mining companies. I invited Kenny Ausubel to a meeting, he and Allan Kapuler, Gabriel Howearth and Josh Mailman had already created a bio-diversity heirloom seed company called Seeds of Change that supported the protection of native seeds threatened by patents of genetic engineers like Monsanto. Seeds of Change enlisted a worldwide network of backyard gardeners to cultivate and protect these native seeds in their gardens and I supported the beginnings of Seeds of Change by finding investors. Kenny immediately hired me to create a Bio-Remediation business which was nicely nested within the Seeds of Change office complex, and we coordinated a conference that year in which I invited a diverse audience of mining operators, pueblo governors, hippie philanthropists and entrepreneurs. Kenny invited the biodiversity experts as speakers, and I invited the bioremediation experts. I presented on the theme of biomorphic design 7 years before Janine Benyus published her book on Biomimicry. The Seeds of Change Conference was such a great success that year, Kenny named it "The Bioneers" which continues today with a worldwide audience and many venues.
