About

I work with people to bring their ideas to life on the page, and make their concepts tangible.

My name is Malcolm Burtley, and I'm a professional illustrator. The bulk of my experience has come from being hired to draw superheros. When I was a kid, all I ever wanted to do was read comic books and draw the pictures inside, so it's a lot of fun that I get to do that as a job now. Even though I've done a lot of superhero art, I've also been hired to design characters from scratch, and create concept art for stories in development. I've done weapon design, interior design, exterior design, car models, spaceship models, mythical creatures, fantasy monsters, etc. My artistic depths are being constantly tested, and I've gotten a lot of interesting jobs to produce a lot of different characters over a range of genres. Fantasy, sci-fi, horror, you name it. I've also done covers for independent comic books, and am currently working towards breaking into mainstream comic books. Really, I'm looking for jobs that challenge me to outgrow my current artistic level, and jobs that add at to my growing wealth of experience.

Work Terms

I live in California so I operate on US Pacific time. I work everyday, from 8am until I finish the task I set out to accomplish that day, but I never work later than 8pm if I can help it (special exceptions are made for clients that live overseas). There are sometimes things that come up that change my work schedule, but 95% of the time, my working hours are Monday-Friday 8am-8pm U.S. Pacific time. I take weekends off to spend time with my wife and kids, so I may not be reachable on Saturdays and Sundays.

I charge a flat fee for interior pencils for comic books, and an additional fee to do the inks as well. I can also color black and white images. Contact me for pricing details. For long term projects that require full time work (ie. a comic series, a series of covers, or development of characters for a book/game/movie) I charge and hourly rate of $20. It covers my time and pays to help replenish all of the art supplies I have to buy out of pocket. I accept pay through Paypal. It's quick, easy, and secure. I don't accept business checks, personal checks, money orders, or physical cash in the mail.

My preferred mode of communication is email, or Skype. My email is M.Burtley.Illustration@gmail.com, and you can find my Skype account by typing the email into the search bar. My laptops, phone, tablets, and even TV are linked to my business email, so when you contact me, every device in the house chimes. It's the most reliable way to send information. I have a business Dropbox to transfer files that may be too large to send over email, and I can give that information to any client that may need it. I like to stay very connected to clients, and keep the line of communication open so that I can deliver the best work possible, and I usually like to shoot at least one email a day just to keep the client abreast of the progress that's being made.
