Former PwC Global Relationship Partner and Current QuickBooks Certified Platinum Pro Advisor

I'm Marco Vargas and I'm a former Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) Global Relationship Partner who now works as a Fractional CFO. I'm supported by two long term employees. Seasoned staff accountants, both former PwC.

My team and I work remotely; in fact, we're based in San Miguel de Allende (San Miguel is in the central highlands of Mexico - it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's often voted one of the most beautiful cities in the world) where my wife (a Consulting Archaeologist) and I are raising a family. I'm a world citizen; my Mother is British, my Father is Mexican/American, I was educated in the USA (I have a degree in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin) and I worked for a Big Four firm (PwC) for 20 years prior to settling down in San Miguel in 2016 and going in to private practice. I speak and write in perfect English; in fact, my English is better than my Spanish. Equally important, I intimately understand accounting rules and laws - particularly as they relate to global, cross-border issues such as transfer pricing and EU VAT triangulation - and always work in full compliance with GAAP.

Working collaboratively, my team has a proven track record of overseeing the finance, accounting, human resources and legal departments of my clients, most doing business across international borders. We manage banking, lending, investor and financial statement auditor relationships, set transfer pricing policies, manage A/P, A/R, payroll (both direct and PEO), budgeting, consulting, tax strategy and compliance, management (cost) accounting, modeling, planning and variance reporting.

On the H.R. side I manage recruiters, shrink and grow headcount, assess and drive the design of industry-competitive compensation packages, establish COLAs and oversee the structuring, awarding and vesting of stock options.

On the legal side I design and create offshore entities, manage law firms and offshore fiduciaries and drive employment and insurance negotiations.

Work Terms

My team and I work out of a fully-featured office designed specifically for working as a remote, fractional CFO. That includes both powerful PCs (Windows 10, Intel Core i5) and powerful Macs (2021 with M1 chip), multiple 31" monitors, a fast (100MBPS) and stable fiberoptic internet connection (with a secondary, satellite backup) and all of the other necessary peripherals (including, specifically, high quality video cameras). Fractional CFO work isn't something I recently decided to give a try because I thought it might be fun - it has been my sole livelihood since 2016 and I'm very good at it. I'm a QuickBooks Certified Platinum Pro Advisor and, beyond accounting software, my remote practice relies heavily on the use of Fathom Reports (software for reporting management accounting results), Zoom, MS Teams, Slack, SamePage, Dropbox, HubDocs, QuickBooks Time (formerly Tsheets), Bill.com, Expensify, Office365 and other similar, cloud-based accounting and collaboration applications. I'm proficient on all of the platforms listed and more.

Oh. And, by the way, I'm an expert with MS Excel. In fact, I can make an Excel spreadsheet stand up on its hind legs, like a dog, and beg for treats.
