About

I'm passionate about creating readable, maintainable, and tested code. It's not enough to just build something that works – code needs to be built with the next developer in mind.

I've been working as a Software Developer for nearly a decade. At the beginning of 2015, I decided to bet on myself and leave my job at Geocaching. I've been running a successful small business for the past 4 years where I developed an online rewards extension for a local multi-million dollar business (the largest casino in Washington State). I continue to work on that project part time while I look for other short term freelance projects.

My skill set largely lies in the .NET ecosystem. All of my previous jobs were based on the .NET stack as a web developer. As such, I'm highly experienced in ASP.NET, Entity Framework, SQL Server, JavaScript, JQuery, HTML and CSS.

I branched out while working at Geocaching and took over the deployment pipeline. I love automation, and I created one click deployments for nearly all web based projects, completely with automatic rollback support if anything went wrong.

My overarching goal is to make the development process so smooth that I can simply focus on the important piece - delivering new features and fixing bugs quickly. To reach this point, you have to use the right tools and iron out your deployment process.

For my personal business, I learned configuration management by building out my entire infrastructure with Chef. I created many custom cookbooks, including automatic clustering and configuration of SQL Server AlwaysOn databases. Once again, my entire pipeline is streamlined, with one click deployments that run all build out the infrastructure, run all automated tests, and deploy all necessary assets to the test, staging, and production environments.

I'm absolutely enamored with Software Development, entrepreneurship and bettering myself. I'm constantly reading about best practices and the latest technologies. You can read about some of my interests on my blog at tech.mattclifton.xyz.

Work Terms

I typically work a standard 9-5 (Pacific), although I'm capable of adjusting somewhat since I work on my own terms.

Payment terms are negotiable per project, with some percentage up front.
