Every sentence matters. That’s why this second sentence is redundant. See, sentences need to stand on their own. Unlike this one, or the second one. Unless it’s a punchy last sentence…
Hello there. My name is Maya Beck
I am a disabled queer writer and artist based in the North Texas area. I’m currently studying creative writing at the University of North Texas. Studying technical writing, literature, and creative writing at UNT has fine tuned my sensitivity towards the ways grammar can create meaning; the ways words create rhythm; and the ways style creates magic…
Magic is something I’m always obsessed with. My free time is spent exploring the depths of Celtic and European folklore and I collect many books on the subject. Celtic and British fairies pre-19th century and their terrifying magic has long fascinated me.
There is nothing that makes me happier than something to write or something to research. Genres I’ve written under include: creative nonfiction, science fiction, fantasy, horror and magical realism. I have some experience writing for creative workshops but I am not yet published; I’m currently working on a small 200-page apocalyptic fairy tale novel and have many genre short stories.
My status as a disabled queer woman (I have mild cerebral palsy as a start) has not only informed my work towards sensitivity and inclusion but also my creative energy. My work has repeatedly explored the bone-rotting horror of being an outsider, the mesmeric joy of finding community, and the complicated minutiae of surviving in a world that was never built for you.
My art is not separate from my writing, as I like to take the free flowing ideas of my visual art and bring that into my writing. I like a playful whimsical style that isn’t afraid of the dark.
