I'm an opinionated full stack web developer, specializing in Ruby. I like to solve problems efficiently.
My name is Matt, and I'm currently a freelance web developer working out of the Jackson, MS area.
I graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science from Mississippi State University in 2006. I worked with Java, .NET, PHP, and several other technologies until I found a Ruby on Rails position in 2010. I worked at a couple startups in New Orleans then eventually moved back home in 2014 and have been freelancing ever since.
I'm a full-stack developer. Most of my professional experience is with Ruby on Rails. That said, I've worked on everything from front-end heavy tasks like converting designs into HTML/CSS to devops/back-end tasks like maintaining and migrating a cluster of EC2 instances and load balancing.
I have experience leading teams. I led the Rails team that created the front-end for the American Express Travel site. When I was CTO of a small startup in New Orleans, I was awarded by a local publication for being "a top mover and shaker in the technology scene."
I love clean, well-written, well-designed code. I strive to write every line the best I can.
I love teaching. I love mentoring newer developers.
I love learning new technology. I'm looking to get into Elixir next.
Work Terms
My creative focus tends to show up very haphazardly. For example, sometimes I like to hang out with my family during the day and put in the work at night or on a Saturday morning.
I prefer Slack and Email over phone calls, but I do understand that they are necessary sometimes.
