Enhancing science communication for all levels of expertise.
Hello! I'm Meagan, a 25 year old graduate student living in the U.S. While my first love is writing and all that goes with it, this interest has so far presented itself in my life in many weird and wonderful ways. In spite of winning awards in English throughout secondary school, I decided to pursue a career in science. I attended university in my home country of Ireland in 2012 where I studied STEM subjects, graduating with a B.Sc. (Chemistry) in 2016. During this time, I found joy in communicating through teaching and writing. I tutored undergraduates in chemistry and physics, advising them on how to better compose lab reports and presentations. I also volunteered as an English literacy teacher for children and as a computer literacy teacher for adults at this time.
Realizing I wanted to continue teaching and writing in my career, I completed the necessary hours to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL/TOEFL). This was my initial plan for after graduation but I instead accepted an opportunity to become a Chemistry graduate at another Irish university. There, my focus was in the area of computational chemistry, and I modeled metal-organic materials with the potential for promising carbon dioxide selectivity. I earned a master's degree on this topic, after also honing my skills in academic paper writing, grant formation, and in how to design good presentation material. I continued researching and writing in this field for over a year with a collaborating group at an institution in Florida, where I have been a Chemistry Ph.D. student since August 2019. I currently teach undergraduate laboratory modules both face to face and online, grading reports and presentations of many styles along the way. I have also helped write and revise academic papers and grants during this time. In light of such interdisciplinary experiences, I would like to further pursue assisting people with their scientific writing projects, and would greatly appreciate the opportunity to do so.
