Earlier tonight, I was reading some college papers I wrote a few years back. I was terrified by the prospect of even taking taking these courses as I lacked confidence in my writing ability. As it would happen, however, not only did I pass these two courses with flying colors, I would be the only student to pass either course with higher than a C.
This boost to my confidence in my writing skills was a far cry from writing on a freelance basis. Indeed, it would be two more years until I broke into the world of "Erotica" writing for profit and it would be quite by chance. In fact, one night, feeling particularly daring, I wondered if I could do something I had heard an old friend discuss trying in passing; I wondered if I could write erotic fiction as he had pondered in exchange for compensation.
Within twenty hours, I had written a convincing-enough cover letter and sample, accepted a project, written my first creative story, and had my first payment on its way. This was much to the chagrin of the friend who admitted reluctantly that my story was "good" but that he was the writer among us and it had been his idea, after all.
Three years later and I have written a few more stories and am seeking to expand my horizons beyond romance and its sub-genre, erotica, although I still find that I can become as engrossed with a story now as I did on that first night when I dared myself to give erotica a shot. Aside from erotica, I adore post-apocalyptic, horror (Stephen King being my all-time favorite suspense/horror icon), and even dark fantasy and erotica.
About me: I am 40 years old and a University graduate. I typically bid by the piece and am available to discuss my assignments very nearly all of the time to provide updates.
I appreciate being provided parameters but then being left with much of my creative license in tact.
The samples I provide are largely unedited but that is subject to change (time allows editing my own work to become possible).
Work Terms
I usually work overnights and usually, in one sitting. This means that I have a strong preference for pieces that do not extend beyond 12k words. My best pieces have produced within the 2k - 8k range and it seems that, if what is sought is a light, breezy piece, it is best to stay within that range.
Otherwise, when I am tasked with crafting stories of 10k - 20k in length, I am drawn more towards the dramatic. I must bear this in mind when I am bidding on jobs.
Also, when I am faced with longer stories and series, I find it helpful to work alongside a content editor in order that my stories maintain congruence of mood and voice.
I work quickly. Generally, I will ask for a couple weeks' time but will end up writing my assignment within a few nights.
