Perfecting Documents for Publication
I am a detail-oriented person with a creative streak and 12 years of experience in editing of all sorts. That experience ranges from basic proofreading to substantive editing that optimizes clarity, organization, and flow. I aim to make sure that what the writer is trying to say comes through clearly to the intended audience. I enjoy working with non-native English speakers; my extensive travels abroad have made me particularly sensitive to the challenges they face in English-language communication.
For the past seven years, I have been a freelance editor. Much of my work has focused on the physical and social sciences, particularly editing articles by non-native English speakers who are hoping to publish in English-language journals. I also have experience editing foreign policy papers for U.S. think tanks. Before working as a freelance editor, I spent five years as an in-house editor for Chemical & Engineering News, the flagship magazine of the American Chemical Society, and participated in writing/editing internships at NIH and the National Zoo.
I have a B.A. in biology and linguistics from Rice University and an M.S. in science journalism from Texas A&M University. I have also done graduate-level coursework and laboratory work in neuroscience and molecular biology.
