Graphics Express. Design Solutions for an impatient world

Contemporary artist and Illustrator M.H. (Michael) Laing was born and brought up in the greater Boston area to an artist mother and an architect father, so naturally both the creative and design processes have been a big part of his life since the very beginning.

From an early age Michael was constantly encouraged to develop his creative skills at every opportunity and both parents were very supportive, enthusiastic and took a “hands on” appoach in teaching him their skills.

It didn’t end there. As Michael puts it, “all through my formative years, I spent a lot of time learning from my parents how to design, draw and paint, helping out at my mom’s juried art shows as well as on my dad’s projects and jobsites, even if there was air travel involved. I had many “bring your kid to work days” and it was always a great experience.

Although he survived the public school system, after high school and on the advise of his father, he took a job as a carpenter for several years along the New England seacoast. “It was a great experience for me. I learned to work hard in all types of weather and met a lot of great people.”

After a few years at Southern Maine technical college and Boston architectural college, Michael was offered a “Bull market cart” at Boston’s Fanueuil Hall Marketplace where he sold his own art along with many of Boston’s up and coming artists and craftspeople.

A father of 2, Michael spent 27 years in Architectural Design and Engineering as a full-time career, while continuing to draw, paint and study art whenever possible. For many years he took on commission work in the architectural, medical and real estate markets. “I could have made a living just doing medical art and Illustration, a lot of artists did at that time. But, no matter how good the work was, hanging a "clinical" illustration of someones large intestine on the living room wall just didn’t look good.”
