Always a storyteller
I had wanted to be a writer since I was six years old, starting out making picture books mostly about my Raggedy Ann and her adventures. There were what I thought distractions along the way, but I understand now that everything led me to where I am. What I never thought, however, was that my first book would be about the suicide loss of my younger sister Denise (Do They have Bad Days in Heaven? Surviving the Suicide Loss of a Sibling). I had always wanted to write beach reading, telling easy stories that could be read in a few hours. Life has taught me that I was supposed to do something bigger through earning a doctorate and writing and speaking about suicide and grief. The journey has taken me through writing multiple books on suicide grief, working on research projects, and now a lifestyle brand where I make clothing and handbags, often from vintage textiles. Writing remains important to me, however, as it's about telling stories in a way that has always made my life meaningful, made me feel like I'm doing what I'm supposed to do.
