Senior citizen in body, 20-something in enthusiasm and spirit. Retirement is not an option!
I dreamed of being a daily newspaper reporter from the time I was 14 and wrote for a weekly in suburban New Orleans. My University of Alabama journalism degree took me in a different direction until I was 65. During those intervening years, I worked in hospital and medical public relations and fund raising, managed conventions, edited (and did most of the writing and ad sales for) a feature publication related to the off-shore oil industry, helped manage local political campaigns, and worked for advertising/p-r firms.
In 1997, I joined the staff of Dabora, Inc., a Shelbyville, Tenn.-based publisher of two show horse newspapers and a slick feature magazine. I left their full-time employ and joined the staff of the Shelbyville Times-Gazette, where I covered the police beat, criminal courts, hospital beat and other general assignments. I also helped found a free clinic and volunteered with several other non-profit agencies.
Family issues necessitated my moving closer to my children. I continue to write for Dabora and for one of the Houston-area suburban weeklies.
On the personal side, I continue to go to horse shows, and occasionally 'cover' them for Dabora. Hobbies: competitive bridge, fishing, reading - and work!
Life is good. Retirement - bah, humbug!
